Who We Are

A movement, not a brand.

Kulani Collective was founded in 2022 in Hoedspruit, South Africa, with a vision to create more connected, ethical, and story-led pathways for African artisans and makers.

What began as a small community-focused initiative has grown into a collaborative platform supporting artisans, crafters, makers, and rural micro-enterprises across Southern Africa.

Today, Kulani works across multiple areas — including artisan development, traceability systems, market access, mentorship, storytelling, retail platforms, training programmes, leather micro-tanneries, and collaborative conservation-linked projects.

People deserve to be seen. The stories behind handmade work matter. And craft has the power to create meaningful, dignified livelihoods when supported ethically and intentionally.

Our Approach

Built alongside, not above.

We work closely with artisans and community-based enterprises over the long term — building relationships rooted in trust, transparency, collaboration, and shared growth. Rather than simply purchasing products, we focus on helping build sustainable pathways to market through:

01 Mentorship and skills development

03 Storytelling and content creation
05 Traceability and transparency systems
07 Exposure to local and international audiences

02 Product refinement and design support

04 Retail and market access
06 Collaboration and partnership development
What We Stand For
Our values

Five principles that guide every decision, partnership, and product.

— 01 —
Storytelling

Every product carries a human story. We believe those stories deserve visibility, honesty, and connection.

— 02 —

Traceability

We believe people should know where products come from, who made them, and how they were created.

— 03 —

Authenticity
Real people. Real craftsmanship. Real stories. Nothing mass-produced. Nothing anonymous.

— 04 —

Dignified Livelihoods
Craft is not a hobby. It is skill, labour, heritage, and income. We work toward fair opportunity and long-term sustainability.

— 05 —

Conservation & Circular Thinking
Many of the landscapes and communities we work within are deeply connected to conservation areas and nature-based economies. We aim to support practices that respect both people and planet.

Our Space
Two homes for Kulani’s work — where stories are first told, and where buyers meet the makers behind the pieces.
— ORPEN GATE · GREATER KRUGER

The Orpen Hub.

Located at the Orpen Gate of the Kruger National Park, the Orpen Hub serves as one of Kulani’s core retail and storytelling spaces within the Greater Kruger landscape. Developed by our community development partner Wild Impact, the space was created to support and represent surrounding communities while creating meaningful market access opportunities for locally made products.

The shop brings together handcrafted products, artisan collaborations, conservation-linked storytelling, and traceable African craftsmanship — creating a platform where tourists, lodges, designers, and local visitors can connect directly with the people and stories behind the work.

The Art House

Based in Hoedspruit, The Art House is a collaborative creative retail and exhibition space developed to celebrate art, craftsmanship, culture, and community connection. The space brings together artists, artisans, makers, designers, and small creative businesses under one shared platform — creating opportunities for visibility, collaboration, exhibitions, workshops, storytelling events, and market access.

The space regularly hosts exhibitions, artisan showcases, creative gatherings, workshops, markets, and collaborative events that connect people more deeply to the stories, processes, and people behind the work.

Work With Us
Our work is built through
collaboration.

Kulani exists because of partnerships — between artisans, communities, conservation organisations, creatives, mentors, retailers, and supporters who believe in more connected and ethical ways of creating.
